USABILITY TEST INTERVIEW
KEY DETAILS
My Role: UX Researcher
Timeline: July 15, 2021 - August 5, 2021
Tools: Zoom, Tetra
PROJECT CONTEXT
This project was an updated usability test for a product that had not been tested on for years. Project Managers wanted to understand current user needs, how the product was being used by present-day users, and what key features needed updating.
GOALS
The primary goal was to gather updated feedback so that the product could be modernized. The product managers were predominantly interested in how the the product could be updated visually.
RECRUITING
Participants were legal professionals recruited through LexisNexis' user panel. The panel exists within the Lexis Qualtrics account. Researchers are able to develop filters to find participants who meet product manager specifications.
METHOD & PROCESS
As the UX researcher I developed a moderator guide based off a key PM questions gathered during a research kickoff with stakeholders.
During the interview session I had participants access and walk through the actual product using zoom's screen & mouse sharing features. Participants were allowed to use the product however they wished. Along the way I asked specific questions to dig deeper into their perceptions of the product's key features and designs.
Sessions took place July 15-16 and August 6. Not many Lexis panel participants used this product, so I was only able to get 4 participants for this study.
ANALYSIS & SYNTHESIS
Each session was recorded using zoom's recording feature. After I had completed all the interview sessions I uploaded the videos to Tetra (a transcription and analysis tool).
Using Tetra I reviewed all the videos and highlighted common themes and interesting quotes. Using the common themes I was able to synthesize my findings into a PowerPoint presentation. Through Tetra I was also able to develop videos so that the users could speak for themselves' on particularly interesting points.
FINDINGS
After conducting this research I found that...
The product is still helpful and well liked despite being old.
The design and functionality could use some updates (as expected).
Frequency of product usage depends upon the job description of the user.
IMPACT & REFLECTION
Impact: My research was the most up-to date information the PM's had about the product in many years. Thanks to my research the company is now able to develop this American product into a globalized version of itself through a merger with another pre-existing product. Designers are now in the process of combining these two products so that their successor can one day be released to a global audience.
Reflection: It was a really special experience being able to bring interest back to a product that had been neglected for so many years. I loved being able to deliver up-to-date research for a tool that so many people were clearly passionate about. I'm very excited to one day watch the global version be released! It will be a very proud day for me knowing that my research helped make it all happen.
