DESIGN REVIEW INTERVIEW

KEY DETAILS

My Role: UX Researcher

Timeline: November 8-9, 2021

Tools: Zoom, Tetra

PROJECT CONTEXT

For the past few years product managers have been working to develop an updated version of a product that will allow attorneys easier access to information that will help them with their case research. As part of this process I was asked to run a study evaluating some updated designs for this product since the previous designs had proved unsuccessful.

GOALS

Goals included...

  • Having participants review 3 designs and select their features from each.

  • Determine if the designs are capturing what is most important to users.

RECRUITING

Participants were recruited through LexisNexis' research panel. 6 Attorneys volunteered to participate in this research.

METHOD & PROCESS

participants underwent a brief initial interview about their work and background. Then, they were walked through the currently existing product before being shown a series of designs for and determining if these updated designs improved their experience. The designs (A, B, and C) were shown in different orders to each participant to ensure that bias was not swaying participant opinions.

ANALYSIS & SYNTHESIS

The zoom recordings were uploaded to Tetra for transcription and analysis. Through reviewing the videos I was able to isolate patterns in user perceptions of the designs. I created videos to include in the presentation so that stakeholders could understand specific areas of concern and confusion.

FINDINGS

Participant perceptions of the new designs were positive. Design A and B were favored for their particular set of features, but the majority of participants wanted the color patterns from design C included in the final product. Participants really liked seeing the designs that incorporated the most information possible at a glance. There was no bias in user perceptions, so design A and B were favored purely for their superior designs.

Participants referenced a few areas of confusion, so further testing would be required to clear up how to make certain features within the designs more intuitive.

IMPACT & REFLECTIONS

Impact: This research allowed PM's and Designers to inch ever closer to their goal of releasing this updated product. Upon its release this product is expected to bring in more income to the company as more users migrate to this upgraded version.

Reflections: I was really happy with this research. It's always a rewarding experience to help PM's and Designers understand how to help our user base. It's also really amazing to know that product is not only important to my company, but to the attorneys who use it to complete their very necessary work. It's incredible to think that my work factors into how smoothy the legal system of the United States can operate.
